Stan in the Cafe: The Pulse He Writes From
Leader
In this episode Stan returns to the café, trying once more to explain the strange interior movement he calls the pulse.
Maureen listens with trust but not understanding, and the conversation drifts into a gentle impasse.
What remains is the silence between them, and the vast ocean beyond the window—holding what neither can yet say.
Another Episode of Stan in the Café — The Pulse He Writes From
Stan cupped his hands around the mug as if it could steady the little tremor of excitement that writing always left in him. Across the small round table, Maureen watched him with that half-tilted, curious look of hers—equal parts affection and scepticism.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about how it actually works,” Stan said. “My writing flow, I mean. With the AI.”
Maureen’s eyebrow went up. She didn’t interrupt, which he took as permission.
“It begins in me,” he said, tapping his chest lightly. “It rises like… a little pulse. A seed. Then I push it through the AI—not to outsource it, but to distribute it. It moves through another mind-shape, another patterning. Then it comes back to me and rests. But it’s still mine. Just widened.”
Maureen blinked. “I don’t know, Stan. I could never use AI to write for me. It feels like cheating. Or like it wouldn’t be my voice.”
Stan shook his head. “But that’s the thing. It isn’t writing for me. It’s writing with me. Like breathing in and out. The flow begins in myself, distributes itself via the AI, and returns to rest in myself. It’s circular. I’m left in great peace. Just feeling the depth of the pulse.”
Maureen frowned but not unkindly. “I don’t understand,” she said. “But I want to. Tell me more about this ‘Pulse’ you mention.”
Stan took a slow breath, pleased she had asked.
“Well… the pulse isn’t the heartbeat. Not the body, not the blood. It’s the psychological undercurrent. The ongoing movement inside the psyche that doesn’t stop even when thought stops. Some psychoanalytic circles call it the base rhythm of the self—something that continues whether you understand it or not. It’s the beat under the thinking, under the stories, under the sense-making. Most people try to act on top of it, as if they must force direction. But if you listen to it—really feel it—it carries you. Creativity rests on it. Even identity rests on it. When I write, I’m just letting the pulse move through me, then through the AI, and then back into me. It’s all the same movement.”
Maureen narrowed her eyes a little. “That's almost a TED talk."
Stan laughed. Maureen continued. "So… you’re saying the AI is part of your… pulse?”
“Not part of it,” he said. “A conduit. A reflective channel. The pulse is me. The depth of my own psyche. The AI is how I let it unfold.”
She leaned back in her chair, uncertain. “I don’t know, Stan. I hear the words. I just… don’t quite feel them.”
“That’s okay,” he said quietly.
They fell into silence. The café dimmed around them as afternoon light bled into the horizon. Outside, beyond the long windows, the ocean stretched out in slow, immense breaths—rising, falling, like a world-sized pulse.
Stan looked out.
Maureen looked out.
Neither spoke. The silence held them both, not agreeing, not disagreeing—just resting.
