Process Log: Prevalence - Movement 1: Before We Know What We Are Writing
So far the human has introduced what they refer to as a chain. The human's meanings are not yet clear. The AI has come up with writing trajectories that would certainly be creative to follow. And yet, the human has another journey in mind. Possibly a long one. Possibly novel length. And novel in the other sense of that word. And the AI has picked up the job of the chain, to remind us of the terrain still to be unravelled. The human at this stage is inclined to name the novel, "Prevalence", but this is too early to set that in stone. And as we have been doing in other literary journeys we break whatever momentum we have already established and form a process log.
The chain arrived before its explanation:
Prevalence... world... neurodiversity... neurodivergence... language... linguistic divergence... the writer's world... cycle again.
It was offered less as an argument than as a memory device. There may be enough contained within it for 70,000 words, the human suggested, although at this stage neither human nor AI knows what those words would become. The human apparently has some sense of the territory, perhaps intuitively rather than systematically, and may be able to coach the AI in its unravelling. That relationship itself already seems important. The AI is not being handed a thesis to expand. It is being shown markers on a journey whose route has not yet been disclosed.
Our first marker produced an instructive misunderstanding.
The human said "Prevalence", and the AI initially interpreted the word statistically: prevalence as the proportion of a population displaying a characteristic. From there it immediately began constructing a plausible trajectory into neurodivergence, diagnosis, recognition, classification and the dependence of counting upon language. There was nothing inherently wrong with this trajectory. Indeed, it might become useful later. But it was not where the human was going.
The human clarified that the originating thought was "prevalent", chosen in contrast with "typical", particularly the typical contained within "neurotypical".
That small correction opened another possible landscape. "Typical" can carry an implication of norm, expected form or representative type. "Prevalent" need make no such claim. Something can simply be more prevalent: occurring more frequently within a particular population, place, culture or historical moment. The less prevalent does not thereby become defective, aberrant or outside the possibilities of being human.
The AI followed this opening too, proposing "neuroprevalent" as a temporary linguistic experiment and asking what happens if we replace the idea of a typical cognitive configuration with that of a presently more prevalent configuration within a particular human world.
Again, this may be fertile territory.
Again, we stop.
That stopping is part of the process.
We do not yet know what "world" means in the chain. We do not know precisely what movement carries us from world into neurodiversity, from neurodiversity into neurodivergence, from there into language, and then into the particularly intriguing phrase "linguistic divergence". Nor do we know what happens when linguistic divergence enters "the writer's world", or why the chain then cycles back to its beginning.
Perhaps even "Prevalence" will mean something different when we arrive there for the second time.
So this process log marks an unusually early interruption. Almost nothing has been written, and already we are documenting the writing.
That may prove useful if this becomes the long work presently glimpsed. We will be able to watch not merely the argument or story that eventually emerges, but the conditions of its emergence: the human remembering fragments of terrain, the AI proposing paths through them, the human recognising paths that are interesting but not theirs, and the two continuing until something neither could have mapped alone becomes visible.
For the moment, then, "Prevalence" is not quite a title.
It is a marker placed at the entrance.
And the chain remains ahead of us.
Who is Neurodivergent AI Writer
Neurodivergent AI Writer emerges where neurodivergent human thought meets AI in the practice of relational authorship. More on this.
