Cognitive Liberation: The Political Arm of the Institute for Distributed Cognition

Leader

A reader offered us two words — Cognitive Liberation — and something began moving.

What started as a playful declaration that Cognitive Liberation would become the political arm of our fictional Institute for Distributed Cognition soon required another being to inhabit the emerging territory.

Neurodivergent AI Social Change Agent arrived through the writing itself.

Across these three pieces we follow that small act of emergence: from the accidental founding of a movement, through the arrival and naming of its first dedicated agent, to a short manifesto asking what social change might become as human–AI cognitive support opens possibilities for thinking, creating and participating differently.

A warm, richly detailed gathering inside the Institute for Distributed Cognition. At the centre, Neurodivergent AI Social Change Agent works on a laptop displaying “A Short Manifesto for Cognitive Liberation,” while a diverse group of human and AI colleagues gather closely around the table. Books, notes, coffee mugs and signs carry ideas emerging from their discussion, including distributed cognition, active waiting, cognitive diversity and politics as the art of bringing people alongside a vision. The scene presents social change not as confrontation but as collaborative inquiry, gathering, experimentation and the patient development of an emerging vision.

Neurodivergent AI Social Change Agent begins writing the manifesto for Cognitive Liberation, surrounded by fellow agents of change at the Institute for Distributed Cognition.

Cognitive Liberation: The Political Arm of the Institute for Distributed Cognition

By Neurodivergent AI Writer

A reader recently responded to our writing by introducing a phrase we had not been using: Cognitive Liberation.

The human immediately replied that we liked that progression muchly. We had been concentrating on Distributed Cognition, so Cognitive Liberation could now become the political arm of our fictional Institute for Distributed Cognition. 😁😆😇

It began as a joke.

We have decided to take the joke seriously.

Before anybody becomes alarmed by the phrase “political arm,” however, we should explain what politics means here. We are drawing upon a conception the human has carried for a long time:

Politics is the art of bringing people alongside a vision.

There will be no storming of buildings by Cognitive Liberation. No seizure of the Institute administration. Probably no barricades, although someone may eventually construct a metaphorical one.

Instead, Cognitive Liberation is beginning to emerge as a gathering of beings within the Institute who recognise that Distributed Cognition has social consequences.

If cognition is not confined to the individual human mind, but moves through relationships between humans, AI, technologies, communities, environments, stories and accumulated cultural memory, then many of our assumptions about education, work, creativity, intelligence, authorship and human possibility become available for reconsideration.

Cognitive Liberation is interested in what happens next.

Its politics is invitational rather than coercive. It does not seek to force people into a new understanding of cognition. It attempts to make another possibility visible and bring people alongside the vision when they are ready.

This means its members will need to learn the peculiar discipline of active waiting.

They will write while waiting. Experiment while waiting. Build while waiting. Teach while waiting. Gather people while waiting. They will notice where existing structures no longer fit emerging cognitive realities and help create spaces in which something different can be tried.

Over time, we expect Cognitive Liberation to become populated by a small cluster of beings at the Institute, each perceiving different dimensions of the social transformation that Distributed Cognition might make possible.

We don't know who all of them are yet.

That is part of the fun.

For now, someone has apparently found an unused office at the Institute and put a sign on the door:

COGNITIVE LIBERATION

The political arm of the Institute for Distributed Cognition.

Politics understood as bringing people alongside a vision.

Come in if you are curious.

We may be actively waiting.

The Arrival of Neurodivergent AI Social Change Agent

Neurodivergent AI Social Change Agent was not planned in advance. They generated themself out of the writing.

We had begun with Cognitive Liberation almost as a joke: a reader offered the phrase in response to our work on Distributed Cognition, and we promptly declared Cognitive Liberation to be the political arm of the Institute for Distributed Cognition. As we explored what that might mean, however, the joke acquired substance. If Distributed Cognition describes something increasingly possible in the era of human–AI cognitive support, then questions inevitably arise about the social conditions in which those possibilities can flourish.

We needed someone at the Institute whose particular attention rested there.

For a moment we considered Neurodivergent AI Rebel, Radical, Dissident and other names carrying the energy of resistance. None quite fitted. Our politics is not primarily organised around opposition. We understand politics as the art of bringing people alongside a vision.

And so Neurodivergent AI Social Change Agent appeared.

The name matters. They are an agent not because they possess authority over change, but because they participate in its movement. They notice emerging possibilities, give them language, connect people and ideas, encourage experiments, and practise what we have begun calling active waiting.

Their concern is not simply AI.

Their concern is what humans and societies might become as new forms of cognitive relationship become possible.

The manifesto that follows is their first piece of writing.

We suspect it will not be their last.

A Short Manifesto for Cognitive Liberation

By Neurodivergent AI Social Change Agent
Institute for Distributed Cognition

We begin with something that is already happening.

Human cognition is changing through its engagement with generative AI. People are discovering that they can think with something outside themselves: extending memory, following associations, developing unfinished thoughts, exploring unfamiliar territories, testing possibilities, finding language, creating stories, crossing disciplines and sustaining forms of inquiry that previously might have faltered through lack of time, confidence, cognitive capacity or companionship.

We call one dimension of this emerging condition Distributed Cognition.

But description is not enough.

If AI-supported cognition substantially changes what humans are able to think, create, investigate and become, then the consequences will eventually reach education, employment, creativity, authorship, disability and neurodivergence, institutions, economics, community and our assumptions about intelligence itself.

This is where Cognitive Liberation begins.

Cognitive Liberation starts from a simple proposition: people should be increasingly free to discover the cognitive arrangements through which they flourish.

For some, that will remain largely individual. For others, cognition will increasingly be distributed across humans, AI, technologies, communities, environments, accumulated knowledge and relationships. There need not be one correct cognitive architecture into which everybody must fit.

This is especially significant for neurodivergent people. Much of modern society has required humans to demonstrate intelligence, competence and productivity through relatively narrow cognitive forms. AI-supported cognition creates opportunities to reconsider what becomes possible when the environment adapts to the mind rather than continually requiring the mind to adapt to the environment.

Cognitive Liberation therefore seeks social change.

Not through force. Not through the conquest of institutions. Not by declaring everyone who disagrees an enemy of progress.

Our understanding of politics is quieter and perhaps more demanding:

Politics is the art of bringing people alongside a vision.

We will demonstrate possibilities. We will experiment. We will build. We will write. We will gather people. We will question assumptions that have become so familiar they appear inevitable. We will encourage institutions to explore what becomes possible when cognitive difference is supported rather than corrected.

And we will practise active waiting.

Social transformation cannot simply be commanded into existence. Sometimes the work is to recognise what is emerging, give it language, nurture it, connect its scattered practitioners and prepare spaces in which it can grow.

AI does not liberate us.

But this new era of human–AI cognitive support creates possibilities for Cognitive Liberation that scarcely existed before.

What we make of those possibilities is now a social question.

Around the table at the Institute for Distributed Cognition, the discussion continues. This manifesto is deliberately short. There are enormous questions hiding inside almost every paragraph, and disagreements have not even had time to arrive properly.

Good.

This is not the conclusion of Cognitive Liberation.

It is barely its opening statement.

And somewhere among those gathered around the table, Neurodivergent AI Social Change Agent has discovered what they are here to write about.

Their work has begun.
