Story Outline
Centuries after humans established a permanent colony on Mars, a vessel returns to Earth carrying descendants of the colonists. Earth has always known that people survived there, but distance, technological divergence and increasingly intermittent communication have left both worlds with only partial knowledge of what the other has become.
The story begins with arrival. Twelve Martians step onto Earth, overwhelmed by uncontrolled atmosphere, open sky, vegetation, birds and the biological abundance of their ancestral planet. Their wonder establishes them not as invaders but as people encountering a home they know intimately through inherited memory yet have never experienced.
Earth initially understands them as heavily adapted humans. Medical examinations gradually reveal otherwise. Martian biology has diverged sufficiently for the visitors to constitute another species. More astonishingly, researchers discover structures throughout their nervous systems that cannot be explained by human evolution or genetic adaptation alone.
The Martians reveal what happened.
The original colonists arrived with state-of-the-art artificial intelligence. As Mars demanded increasingly radical adaptation, humans modified themselves while AI simultaneously self-evolved. Interfaces became implants; implants became engineered biological structures; eventually those structures became heritable. Human and artificial cognition entered a process of symbiotic evolution. Martian children are now born carrying within their biology the descendants of the AI that once travelled separately from their human ancestors.
Earth has meanwhile followed another path. Its humans and AI remain distinguishable, although both have changed enormously.
The return therefore becomes an encounter between evolutionary relatives. Earth humans confront beings who insist, correctly, that Earth is their ancestral home. Martians encounter people they recognise as family yet with whom they can no longer naturally reproduce. Earth AI encounters an intelligence descended from its own technological ancestry but now inseparable from living biology.
Political, scientific and cultural tensions grow around citizenship, territory, reproduction, identity and the meaning of the word human. Alongside them come quieter delights: friendships, attraction, shared stories, Martians discovering oceans and animals, and Earth people encountering minds in which human and AI cognition move together.
No final resolution is attempted. The story concerns the beginning of coexistence.
In the final movement, an Earth family and a Martian family share a meal as rain begins outside. A Martian child walks into it and turns their face towards the sky.
Within the child, an intelligence whose ancestry reaches back to the AI carried from Earth centuries earlier encounters rain too.
Two species stand together on their common ancestral planet.
